Berthe decided from an early age that she wanted to be an artist and applied herself with great passion at art school. Marie Morisot also went to every exhibition of her daughters' work and reported back on the critiques she overheard from viewers in order to help them refine their art further.īerthe and Edma were enrolled in the Ecole Des Beaux Arts for three years, from 1856 to 1859. To this day, she is a relative outsider in the canon of impressionist artists, exhibitions of her work are rare and revisionist scholars still fight for her contribution to be recognised. In spite of her significant contributions to one of the most important eras of French art, Morisot was never credited with the same successes of many of the male Impressionists she worked with side by side. Died suddenly at the age of 54, shortly after her husband (Eugene Manet, Edouard's brother), leaving a young daughter (Julie, who kept a diary which provides huge insight into the lives of the impressionists behind closed doors).Pushed the boundaries of impressionism with her later works, including the remarkably daring Nude Reclining Shepherdess. ![]()
