Now a young adult, Mumble is frequently ridiculed by the elders and their leader Noah. Mumble narrowly escapes the hungry birds by falling into a crevice. One day, Mumble encounters a group of hostile skua, with a leader who is tagged with a yellow band, which he says is from an alien abduction. It was nominated for the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film, both losing to Cars. It earned the recipient of the inaugural BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film, and the fourth non- Disney or Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Happy Feet received generally positive reviews from critics with praise for its visuals, storyline and songs, and grossed $384 million against its $100 million production budget, becoming the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2006. However, Warner Bros., the film's production company, was on too tight a budget to release Happy Feet in IMAX digital 3D. The studio had hinted that a future IMAX 3D release was a possibility. Happy Feet was released in North American theaters on 17 November 2006, and in Australian theaters on 26 December 2006, which was simultaneously released in both conventional theatres and in IMAX 2D format. Composer John Powell composed the score while the film features more than 10 songs from famous artists, mostly to fit with the mood of the scene or character. Though primarily a computer-animated film, the film does incorporate motion capture of live action humans in certain scenes. Miller cites as an initial inspiration for the film an encounter with a grizzled old cameraman, whose father was Frank Hurley of the Shackleton expeditions, while partially inspired by earlier documentaries such as the BBC's Life in the Freezer. After being continuously ridiculed and rejected by peers and his own father (Jackman), Mumble departs on a journey to learn what is causing the local fish population to decline - and to find himself along the way. Set in the cold land of Antarctica, the film follows Mumble (Wood), an emperor penguin who is able to tap dance brilliantly despite his lacking the ability to sing the heartsong to attract a soul mate. It is the first animated film produced by Kennedy Miller and Animal Logic. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, and Kingdom Feature Productions. ![]() You could even compile a shared list of AI resources for your board and leadership team, focusing on bite sized content which will fit easily into their busy schedule such as blogs, podcasts and short courses.Nonprofits and other NGOs have to be able to coordinate with employees, partners, and volunteers from all around the globe at a moment’s notice. This can take the form of blogs, such as this excellent piece on how nonprofits can take their first steps with AI by Kim Brooks, Community Engagement Program Manager in Microsoft’s Philanthropies network. If you work for a cancer charity, show them how other cancer charities and other health organizations are using AI to deliver better services, make research breakthroughs or fundraise. So, they need to see what the competition is up to. Leaders are, by their nature, competitive people. Show them how organizations similar to theirs are using AI.I do this by showing them how AI is all around them and how they are using it every day (even without realising it), for example when unlocking their phone with facial recognition or using predictive text to draft an email. We need to make AI tangible and real for busy nonprofit leaders. News stories often focus on apocalyptic predictions or technical coverage of new products. The way that AI is talked about in the media can feel intimidating and inaccessible. Here are three tried and tested ways I have seen work with leaders: The good news is that there are still many ways you can engage nonprofit leaders with AI. It may also be the result of a lack of headspace and time to think strategically, given the pressure that nonprofits are under at the moment. If you’re in a situation where your board, or your wider leadership team, are wondering what to do about AI, or AI is way down on their list of priorities, this may be due to skills. I’d love to hear from those reading this outside the UK how these stats compare to your experience, and what might be influencing the trends you are seeing. ![]() And this is likely to have an impact on speed, scaling and risk management when adopting AI. What this means, for AI and other areas of digital transformation, is that it is significantly harder for trustees to offer the right strategy, scrutiny and support without the skills and diverse perspectives required to futureproof nonprofits. So, there is a lack of digital natives on trustee boards. A mere 0.5% of trustees are 18-24, despite making up 12% of the population. According to Getting on Board’s research, the average age of a nonprofit trustee in the UK is 60-62. This means that there is a lack of diverse perspectives on these boards, without which it is harder to form a clear vision for the future.Īge may also play a role here. Much has been written about the lack of diversity on UK charity boards, with recent research revealing that charities lag behind FTSE 100 companies in terms of board diversity. In the UK, charity board members are unpaid volunteers. Why are digital skills on UK charity boards so low? In truth this picture hasn’t really changed since 2017 when we founded the report. 42% say there is a need for more data informed decision making at board level. In addition, 57% of boards have skills that are either low or have room for improvement. For the fifth year running, 56% of charities still need their CEO and board to provide a clear vision of what digital could help them achieve. In last year’s Charity Digital Skills Report we heard that: In the UK, digital skills around the board table is a significant and systemic issue. One of the things we will be looking at in our report is whether there is a correlation between digital skills at board level and AI adoption. Yes, you’ve guessed it- so much of this comes down to the leadership that nonprofits are getting, or not getting, about AI.ĭigital skills at board level and what this means for your nonprofit We want to hear how charities and their leaders are using AI, what they’ve learned about adopting these tools and what they see as the opportunities and challenges ahead. The subject of how nonprofit leaders are responding to AI is very much on my mind at the moment, as we are gathering data about this across the UK in the survey to build this year’s Charity Digital Skills Report. The need for strong leadership is even more important in the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence. Leadership is the Ingredient X of digital transformation. These are all key elements of the discussions I’m having with nonprofits about AI. So many of these discussions were ostensibly about digital transformation, but they were really about decision making and accountability, and whether there was a vision for change that others could get behind. When I reflect on the many conversations I’ve had over the years about digital, there is a theme which unites them all. ![]() If you’re looking for some inspiration to transform your front yard into a stunning outdoor space, then you’ve come to the right place. How can the Production-Possibilities Frontier be Shifted? Such a situation would make carrots much more attractive to produce (assuming the profits generated in the sale of both carrots and potatoes remain constant). In such a scenario, the trade-off would change, as producing 1 potato would require the economy to forego the production of 2 carrots.Ĭonversely, producing 1 carrot would mean that the economy would need to forego the production of 0.5 potatoes. ![]() Suppose that the cost of producing 1 potato increases to k=200, and the cost of producing 1 carrot remains constant. Taking Economy A as an example, suppose that the total labor and capital inputs required to manufacture goods are summarized by the variable k. The 1-to-1 trade-off would only hold if carrots and potatoes both had the same k value, say 100 in the current economic conditions. How can the Slope of the Production-Possibilities Frontier Change?Ĭhanges in the slope of the PPF are mainly linked to the production costs of the goods in the economy. Thus, the economy decides to produce 400 carrots, and following the 1-unit trade-off circumstance that exists in this economy, there will only be 100 potatoes produced as a result. This year, due to a drought in a competitor carrot producer, the price of carrots increases, and Economy A wants to capitalize on this by producing more carrots than in the base case. Suppose that in a base case, Economy A produces at the equilibrium quantities of 250 potatoes and 250 carrots. This means that for every additional carrot produced, Economy A will need to cut back the production of potatoes by 1 unit due to its scarce production inputs. Looking at the slope of the frontier in the graph above, we see that there is a 1-unit trade-off between producing carrots and potatoes. However, if we suppose that the economy sees profitability in both goods and wants to produce both, we encounter the idea of trade-off. We also see that if Economy A devotes all resources to producing potatoes, it would be able to produce 500 units. It tells us that if Economy A were to devote 100% of its labor and capital to producing carrots, it would be able to manufacture 500 units. Here, we can see the “frontier” graphically. Thus, the Production-Possibilities for Economy A would look like this: Both goods require two main inputs in order to be manufactured: labor and capital, which are scarce in Economy A. How Does the Production-Possibilities Frontier Work?Ĭonsider Economy A, which only produces two goods (for simplicity): potatoes and carrots. Therefore, there is only a finite amount of any one good that can be produced, and the scarce resources must be carefully allocated to the production of many goods. The Production-Possibilities Frontier refers to the idea that in a given economy, factors of production such as labor and capital are scarce. Written by Tim Vipond What is the Production-Possibilities Frontier?
